Paint additives – siccatives

What are siccatives?
Siccatives are substances that accelerate drying. They are added during production to oil paints, varnishes and paints based on alkyd resins to accelerate curing by oxidation. Metal soaps are used as siccatives, np. lead soaps, cobalt, manganese or zinc linolenic acid, naphthenic, abietine and octane.

How UV absorbers in clear coats work?
Absorbers of ultraviolet radiation transform the incident ones, aggressive rays into heat, thereby reducing their harmful effects.

What are surfactants? For what purpose are they used in the coating technique?
Surfactants interact at the interfaces of different substances, improving their mixing. Surfactants are used, for example, in. as wetting agents.

What needs to be done when making paint, to later obtain a matt coating effect?
The matt effect of the coating can be obtained, adding an excessive amount of pigment during the production of the paint. Because of the high pigment content, the paint does not flow completely smoothly over the surface, and the incident light rays are scattered, which gives it a matte appearance. However, such coatings get dirty quickly. Therefore, the other option is generally chosen and suitable matting agents are added, np. silicates, polyethylene etc.

For what reason thickeners are added to paint materials?
Thickeners are added to increase the viscosity of the material. They prevent separation of ingredients and sedimentation (deposition of heavy particles). They can also improve the workability of coating materials, but also to give them thixotropic properties.
